Paul Zweifel, born in Switzerland in 1848, was one of the most influential gynaecologists and obstetricians in the German-speaking area during the years from 1880 up to 1910 (Fig. 1). His important contributions concerning the metabolism of the intrauterine foetus were discussed and presented in detail some years ago during the Third International Symposium on the History of Anesthesia held in Atlanta [1]. The author mentioned that the publications of Zweifel on foetal pharmacology and physiology had a tremendous impact on the medical profession so that they were discussed widely at obstetric meetings. Moreover, he wrote that Zweifel had a long and distinguished career in obstetrics and gynaecology. The author failed to mention Zweifel's important role in establishing new anaesthetic techniques in operative gynaecology in Germany, a fact which is virtually unknown. Convinced that Paul Zweifel and his scholars became responsible for the introduction and broad use of modern pain-relieving methods in the German-speaking area, we want to present a closer look on this less well-known merits of Zweifel (Fig. 2).
