Remediation of a High Priority Petroleum Site Using A Combination of Remedial Technologies

When a contaminated property has been identified, site assessment takes place to characterize the impacts, in terms of the lateral and vertical extent and the nature and concentration of the contaminants. A remedial action plan (RAP) is prepared, after a pilot scale test of the technology proposed for the site. The RAP and test will focus on selecting the single best technology for a site, whether in terms of cost, effectiveness, or regulatory approval. Other technologies may be considered, but only one is selected as the most appropriate. The RAP for the subject site in Ohio recommended not one technology but six, in a combination that represented the most cost-effective and reasonable approach to remediation. Remedial technologies selected for site include LNAPL skimming, groundwater pump and treat, soil vapor extraction, catalytic oxidation, monitored natural attenuation, and risk assessment. In addition, a second source area of the site was treated with a surfactant-based soil washing operation. The remedial system was designed to be easily relocated to another site and used over again. On site concentrations have decreased to the point that a risk assessment has a strong potential for site closure. Off site impacts have been completed diminished by natural attenuation.
