Pheromones are chemicals that impact the behavior and or physiology of animals through stimulation of multiple sensory organs including the volmeronasal organ, olfactory bulb and other olfactory receptors. They are secreted by special glands that provide a method of communication among individuals. Pheromones are not species specific and can have completely different impacts on other species (semiochemicals). They can directly impact the physiology of the receiving animal causing both hormonal and behavioral changes.
