Cushing's syndrome is one of the most common endocrine diseases in the dog. The majority of dogs (about 80-85 percent) with naturally occurring hyperadrenocorticism have the pituitary-dependent form [pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH)] ofthe disorder, only about 15 percent of dogs have functional adrenal tumors. A third form, iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism caused by exogenous glucocorticoid administration, is a well-recognized and common problem in the dog. Hyperadrenocorticism occursmostly in middle-aged to older dogs, however, PDH also has been described in dogs less than 2 years of age. Poodles, dachshunds, boxers and beagles seem to be at increased risk to develop PDH. While no breed predilection has been seen in dogs with adrenal tumors, adrenal tumors seem to be more frequent in the female dog.
