The Israeli metrology system is discussed in association with standardization and accreditation, composed together an infrastructure influencing quality of products and services in the country. The role of a national metrology institute (NMI), representing Israel at BIPM as a member of the Metre Convention from 1985, is playing by the National Physical Laboratory of Israel (INPL) that is a department of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Employment. Secondary calibration and testing laboratories are mostly private organizations acting as an individual unit or as a division of a big institution such as aircraft or military industry. Field laboratories are usually a part of a factory or plant certified together with the factory against ISO 9000 standards by the Standard Institution of Israel and some other organizations. The Israel Laboratory Accreditation Authority (ISRAC) is acting according to a special law of 1997. About 44 independent calibration and testing laboratories are accredited today by ISRAC against standard ISO 17025 and GLP standards. Laboratories passed accreditation and interested to participate in the testing products importing into Israel for their correspondence to the Israeli standards, should be approved by the Commissioner of Standardization at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Employment. Legal metrology activity is performing by the department of the Controller of Weights and Measures at the same Ministry based on the UK mandatory regulations for Palestine of 1947. Now a draft of the Israel law on metrology is at the first stages of developing.
