A novel CT based algorithm for accurate estimation of component position in THR

Introduction: Precise knowledge of implant position is fundamental to analysis of THR. Post operative and follow up radiographs do not give an accurate estimation of inclination and especially anteversion of the acetabular and the femoral components. We report a novel CT based algorithm for precise 3D estimation of component position with a low dose of radiation. These measurements were based on Anterior Pelvic Plane introduced by Jaramaz et al(1) for computer assisted cup placement. Traditional CT scans of the pelvis was around 10 mSv, equivalent to about 4.5 years of background radiation (average UK background radiation is 2.2 mSv per year), the Perth protocol for lower limb CT scans has a dose of 2.5 mSv ( Perth)(2). Our protocol has been modified to bring down the radiation dose while allowing accurate estimation of the component position.
