First, let me state that my experience is from the corn wet milling industry. However, I believe most of the concepts are pertinent to other byproducts as well. The primary residual materials that are inherent to the corn wet milling industry are corngluten feed, corn germ meal, and corn gluten meal. Because corn gluten meal is often valued at more than its relative protein value and it is used primarily by the pet food industry, it is seldom considered a traditional byproduct. Because corn germ meal is primarily a component of corn gluten feed and otherwise available only from a few sources, my comments about byproducts are primarily related to corn gluten feed.
