The purpose of this paper is to relate the experiences of two novices to the world of Beowulf cluster software and parallel processing. We're a team of two with a well-established background in the development of "research" software and hardware configuration. As we took our first steps we investigated various operating systems, available applications and software components. We designed the cluster with an eye for meeting the needs of the developers who would eventually be taking advantage of its computing power. For a detailed account of the hardware side of the project, please read "Bleeding on the Edge: A First Experience with Beowulf Hardware". The focus of this paper is on the software aspects of the project.
