The User Environment Portal Server (UEPS) is a software platform implementing the Model-Driven Operational Solution. UEPS is also a Web-based context management system extending the enterprise portal paradigm. UEPS is generated from knowledge models. The main purpose of UEPS is to provide an intermediate layer through which end-users can interact with the Intelligent Infrastructure. While the Intelligent Infrastructure provides for bridging gaps among methodologies, delivery approaches, and continuous business solutions, UEPS focuses on operational aspects. If we must expect complex problems to require complex solutions, then simplicity is a key goal when implementing a complex software infrastructure. From the end-user's point of view, the aim is to generate contextual and usable user interfaces. This paper discusses what is meant by UEPS, its implementation of the Model-Driven Operational Solution, the latest results being delivered by UEPS in EXTERNAL IST-1999-10091, and the goals for UEPS in MAESTRO IST-2003-xxxxx. The Intelligent Infrastructure in EXTERNAL is a first platform for managing distributed, model-generated workplaces, as well as for managing the concurrent development of models and meta-models, and the associated methodologies and customer solutions. The Intelligent Infrastructure in MAESTRO, which inherits the capabilities of the one in EXTERNAL, focuses on the next generation of the Model-Driven Operational Solution. This paper focuses on the UEPS architecture, on its integration with the Intelligent Infrastructure, and on the services provided. How do active knowledge models drive the operational solutions?
