The method of neutron radiography is used to evaluate the water ingress into wooden corner connections. It was proven that corner connections slowly open during cyclic swelling and shrinking processes of wood. An easier access of water is therefore possible during weather influences. Neutron radiography was found to be a suited method for the qualitative test of water ingress into the occurring joints. The quantitative description of the water distribution is also possible. It was found that the kind of the comer connection and especially the way how the parts are fixed together have an important influence on the water uptake. Future investigations are planned for tests on different surface coatings and protection methods, the detailed evaluation of kinds of connections and die way of coating (single vanishing before mounting and finishing at the end). The described method is suitable for the study of drying processes as well.
