Caryospora-specizs infestation in Falconidae has previously been shown to be a common clinical problem in captive birds, resulting in a high incidence of morbidity and in some cases acute mortality. Chemotherapeutic strategies for control of clinicaldisease as well as neonate management to avoid exposure (and hence disease) have been published previously. Exposure of certain species of Falconidae to certain Caryospora-species oocysts, followed by re-challenge with the same species of oocyst, has shown a significant reduction of oocyst shedding at the time of re-challenge. This paper describes the first published use of a Carycxspora-species vaccine, in an attempt to prevent infestation and associated morbidity. A double blind field trial was conducted, involving a vaccinate group and 2 control groups, which were subsequently challenged with live heterologous vaccine. A statistically significant reduction in morbidity and oocyst shedding was demonstrated in the vaccinated group over the control groups.
