The objective of modern pig production is to maximise the quantity and quality of pig meat produced per sow per year, or per lifetime, at minimal cost. A major component is to ensure that the sow produces an adequate number of piglets per year, or per lifetime, and nutrition is a key element in achieving this, since it has a major effect on the chief components of litter size, that is ovulation rate, fertilisation rate and embryo survival, as well as the number of litters per sow per year.
