Lactococcus lactis lactis (LLL) and Streptococcus uberis (SU) are among Gram-positive, catalase-negative bacteria that are known bovine mastitis pathogens. Commercially available biochemical identification systems have allowed for identification of LLL that have been presumptively identified as SU with conventional aerobic culture methods. Invasion and survival of SU isolated from mastitic milk has been reported within bMEC (Tamilselvam et al., 2006), but invasion characteristics of LLL within bMEC have not been studied. Cases of clinical mastitis caused by LLL have been reported to have lower bacteriological cure rates and longer duration of treatment when compared to cases of clinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus spp (Lima et al., in review).The objective of this study was to determine the invasiveness and immune gene expression induced by Lactococcus lactis lactis and Streptococcus uberis in MAC-T cells.
