A201 is one of the high strength cast aluminum alloys used in aerospace applications. Despite its high strength, the alloy along with other members of Al-Cu alloy family, suffer from poor hot tearing resistance making casting process difficult. In this investigation, the effect of rare earth elements when added as Mischmetal to Al-Cu alloy on the hot tearing resistance was evaluated. The rare earths seem to improve the hot tearing resistance of the alloy. Microstructural examination revealed a modified eutectic structure. However, the strength of the alloys is not improved by the addition of Mischmetal after normal heat treatment. These findings are presented and discussed.
