In the design of a precision presstool, it is necessary to assign tolerances to all dimensions. The combinations of these tolerances must be sufficiently tight to guarantee, that the tool will perform as intended. The quality of a presstool can be judged by the quality of the sheared surface of the blanked/pierced component. One of the critical parameter of the blanking/piercing operation is the die clearance. It is the diametrical clearance between the punch and die. Theoretically, the die clearance should be evenly distributed around the punch. But, when tolerances are assigned to various components of the presstool, uneven distribution of die clearance results, which affects the quality of the sheared surface. Experiments are conducted on samples with different die clearances. The samples are examined using microscope to determine the quality of the sheared surface. A mathematical equation is arrived to relate the dimensional tolerances of the presstool and the quality of the sheared surface on the samples.
