For many vibration problems where two natural frequencies are close in value with sufficient damping, it becomes difficult to apply traditional experimental identification methods such as those based on frequency response functions. In this paper a relatively straightforward procedure based on identifying the mechanical impedances of multi degree of freedom systems from impact response data is proposed. The technique is applied to experimental data from a highly coupled two degree of freedom beam system and the results are compared with those obtained using frequency response function techniques. Finally, it is shown how the procedures can be extended to identify non-linear system elements.
