In structural dynamics, stability problems are very often caused by barlike structures. Typical examples are long and small boring bars where too high free length to diameter ratios involve chattering or instability of the cutting process-Based on a process model of this self-exciting system, optimization criteria is used that allows to evaluate different new proposed design ideas. In a first step, stiffness and eigenfrequency for several geometrical designs and materials are discussed before, in a second step, also damping is involved in the optimization. A special extension is made to composite materials that allows to design composite properties (stiffness and damping) by changing fibre orientation of the different layers.
