Effects of Electro-acupuncture on Diabetic Sensory Neuropathy

4 type2 diabetic patients with chronic sensory neuropathy were treated with electro-acupuncture and they all demonstrated a significant improvement in health. The 4 diabetic patients had been suffering from sensory disturbances in the lower extremities for more than a year when they referred to us. They had been evaluated medically and neurologically. They referred to us because their sensory disturbances were unresponsive to the usual care and medications. 5 acupoints on the lower extremities were chosen to provide the best curative effects, SP6, SP9, BL60, BL65 and LR3. Disposable Japanese needles (#3), 30 mm in length, were used on all points. SP6 and SP9 were electrically stimulated by a small battery powered stimulator at 150Hz for 20 minutes. Red lead (positive) was attached to SP6 and black lead (negative) to SP9. This treatment, opposite to the usual acupuncture usage on the Spleen meridian, was a serendipitious discovery of Russell J. Erickson and Bart Edwards. The intensity was adjusted according to the patient's tolerance. Our objective was treatment not research, so sham acupuncture was not used as a control.
