Pain is a complex perceptual experience rather that a simple sensation, as theorists and clinical researches affirm. It can be divided in acute and chronic. Acute pain is a transient, continuously changing state that differs radically from normal daily life; it is often psychologically related to fear and general distress and relates intimately to intense emotional arousal; it frequently has a strong association with tissue pathology and clear, well-focused sensory location and characteristics. Acute pain states can be brief, lasting moments or hours, or can persist for weeks or months. Chronic pain is an enduring condition that has become a component of the daily life of the patient and can also become focal in a complex network of suffering involving depression, somatic preoccupation, physical limitation, sleep disturbance, hopelessness. This definition excludes many forms of cancer pain or rheumatoid arthritis but includes pain associated with other persistent musculoskeletal, neuropathic, visceral, degenerative disorders and pain problems with behavioural components. Although the same methods are applied to the measurement of acute and chronic pain, the goals of assessment and the interpretation of the measures are usually different. A complete evaluation of a patient with pain and a successful treatment require quantification of patient's pain.
