RCAS1 (a receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells) is an apoptosis-associated protein that induces apoptosis in activated T cells. To investigate the role of RCAS1 in HIV-1 infection, we examined serum levels of RCAS 1 in HIV-infected patients at different clinical and immunological stages in cross-sectional and longitudinal testing. Although RCAS1 levels did not correlate with clinical stage, they correlated significantly with CD8+ T cell numbers. Furthermore, RCAS1 levels were significantly higher in patients whose level of CD4+ T cells did not respond to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) than in those who exhibited a positive response to ART. The longitudinal testing showed no significant changes in serum levels of RCAS1 during ART. The present findings suggest that serum RCAS 1 level predicts effects of ART and immunological prognosis in patients with HIV infection.
