A new study on atmospheric CO_2 so called FACTS has been initiated by the European Space Agency in 2004. The main purpose is to evaluate a mission concept to monitor CO_2 from space. A team of scientists and industrial partners is conducting a one year study for pre definition of an active Lidar payload to complement the existing and foreseen passive space missions. One main objective of the present study is to derive the mission specifications and to develop a end-to-end simulator in order to derive realistic performance. The study is conducted step by step (i.e. work packages) ⅰ) to derive the specifications, ⅱ) to review the existing passive missions to better determine when and where an active mission can provide with additional information, ⅲ) to define an affordable active mission and suitable DIAL Lidar concept. The study will clearly identify the key technologies and technology roadmap.
