The proposed ROGER system is designed as a spacecraft with rendezvous and capture capabilities including inspection in the vicinity of the target and stabilization and transportation features for the combined configuration. The proposed capture system is a deployable and closable net. The net is ejected from the mother spacecraft at a safe distance from the target to prevent any collision. After transport to the disposal orbit the net will be cut and the mother spacecraft will return to the operational orbit of the next target. Another system is additionally proposed: a tethered/cabled gripper, a 6 DOF remote-con- trolled small system linked by a cable to the mother spacecraft which can be used for power supply and as data link. The gripper vehicle can be used to capture fast tumbling/spinning systems at a safe distance from the mother spacecraft and will perform rate damping of the target by various means, e.g. thrusters or magnetic torquers in LEO. The cable link permits an almost free motion of the system after capture of the target. The capture systems can be used operationally in all orbits, e.g. GEO and LEO, but the return requirements, including the specific ground safety aspects for LEO relating to the mass of the target, require a controlled re-entry of the captured target into a prescribed descent corridor. The philosophy of the multiple use of the mother spacecraft e.g. a transfer to a new target orbit, will be traded here against other potential transfer solutions e.g. propulsion kits.
