Recent dust events and their relation to wind and precipitation in the strong dust source of Hexi Corridor in West China

The seasonal distributions of monthly dust events and dust depositions in the Hexi Corridor during three periods: 1986-1988, 1992-1994, 1998-2000 showed that dust outbreaks occur frequently in spring months (March, April, and May), While in Autumn months (September, October, and November) they are the least frequency. The spring dust outbreak, in the Hexi Corridor is characterized by the declining trend during the preceding eight years (1986-1993) and the increasing trend during the last eight years (1993-2000). The data of the daily TSP concentrations and monthly dust accumulations often months (January-October) in 2001 at 13 sites in four urban cities were analyzed to show that the dust events exerted a major influence on the TSP levels and dust accumulations in the urban cities in the Hexi Corridor and loess areas. Their higher TSP concentration peaks associated with high wind speed peaks were simultaneously recorded during the dust storms. Linear analysis indicate that daily mean TSP concentrations increase with the daily mean wind speed when the daily mean wind speed is more than 3 m/s, and the high TSP levels induced by the dust outbreaks are ~10 times greater than the low background TSP levels in the Hexi Corridor and the loess area.
