The expression of p63, Notch 1 and its ligand Jagged 2, which is up-regulated by TAp63, was examined in 139 samples of germ cell tumors in order to evaluate its possible relationship with their pathogenesis. The expressions of transcript and protein were positive for p63, Notch 1 and Jagged 2 in testicular tissues. However, in seminomas, they were negative for Notch 1 and Jagged 2 but were positive for p63, they were negative for p63 and Jagged 2 but were positive for Notch 1 in embryonal carcinomas and choriocarcinomas, and they were positive for p63, Notch 1 and Jagged 2 in teratomas. Our results offer the possibility that the activity of the p63 and Notch signaling system, critical factors in cell type specification, correlates with the different histological subtypes of germ cell tumors, which may be responsible for characteristics of cancer cells such as responses to chemotherapy and/or irradiation.
