New MnZn ferrite with high saturation flux density Bms was developed as material suitable for transformer cores built into flyback mode power supplies. The Bms at 100°C is 460mT and the core loss Pcv at 100kHz, 200mT and 100°C is 380kW/m~3. Bms is increased by 20% and Pcv is almost the same as that of the current low loss MnZn ferrite. By the circuit calculation, the transformer using the new ferrite was designed to reduce 20% in the cross sectional area and 30% in the volume, because of the 20% larger value of the incremental flux density AB than that of the current ferrite. In spite of the smaller volume, the temperature rise in the new ferrite transformer is almost equal to that of the transformer using the current ferrite. In addition, the gap length in the center pole of the new core was decreased so that the leakage flux, which causes eddy current loss in the windings, was reduced. The conversion efficiency of the power supply was, as a result, enhanced by 0.4%.
