Stream habitat changes along an agricultural impacted stream

We studied changes in stream habitat characteristics along the Agiiera stream (North Spain), a 3rd order stream that drains a 150 km2 rural watershed. Streambed composition differed between the headwaters and the lower reaches of the stream where alluvial deposits exist. Bed substrate was maintained at one site by mechanical rearranging of the bed materials. The riparian forest cover varied from total absence to full cover and was not related to the land use on the banks. Reduction of forest cover was always accompanied by a reduction of the number of species in the forest canopy. We conclude that: (1) large differences in stream habitat quality can be observed over short distances (less than 2 km), (2) stream habitat changes are difficult to predict as a function of the land use that is dominant on the stream banks, and (3) at the reach level, stream habitat characteristics depend on the resiliency of the stream corridor and on the management practices being applied.
