By understanding differing stakeholder perspectives, policy developers and planners can provide sound basis for the management and decision-making processes of Mediterranean landscapes. Hedgerows are important ecological features in many north European landscapes but little research has been done on them in Mediterranean environments. This paper reports on the perceptions of people to hedgerows in central Spain. Through a series of interviews, contrasting perceptions were found between different target groups. While farmers had a mainly practical view of the hedgerows, planners and lay people had a more aesthetic perception. Such differences in perception and in the use of language to describe hedgerows could potentially cause misunderstandings between different stakeholders leading to difficulties in identifying cultural and ecological priorities for conservation management of hedged landscapes either at the local or regional scale.
