The dwell/penetration transition velocity and penetration velocities were determined for a commercially-available hot-pressed silicon carbide (SiC) in a baseline target configuration. The targets consisted of SiC cylinders slip-fitted into Ti6AI4V cups and thin Ti6A14V cover plates welded to the cups. The lateral and back surfaces of the SiC cylinders were well confined in this target configuration, but not pre-stressed. The diameter of the ceramic cylinders was 38.1 mm. Three ceramic thicknesses were evaluated (12.7, 25.4. and 38.1 mm) in this study. Laboratory-scale tungsten-based (W-based) long-rod penelrators (L/D 20, D = 3.175 mm) were fired into the targets at various velocities ranging between 1000 - 1700 m/s. The ballistic interaction between the penetrators and ceramic targets were captured in time using multiple 1 MeV flash X-rays. The resulting X-ray radiographs were used to determine the dwell/penetration transition velocity and penetration velocities. The results show no apparent effect of thickness on the dwell/penetration transition velocity; however, an effect on penetration velocity was noted for the 12.7 mm thick cylinders. Data for this SiC which includes the effect of lateral pre-stress on the dwell/penetration transition velocity and penetration velocity has recently been published [1]. Comparison of the two data sets indicates that there is a large effect of lateral pre-stress on the dwell/penetration transition velocity, but not on penetration velocity. The experimental set-up and results are discussed.
