Introduction: It is known that there are increased concentrations of interleukin 1(beta) (IL-1(beta)) and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-lra) in serum, stools and colonic mucosal specimens in ulcerative colitis (UC) children. The aim of the present study was to estimate IL-l(beta) and IL-lra in serum during recovery, and evaluate their correlations with clinical, endoscopic and histopathological UC activity.Methods: Twenty children with active UC, 14 children with non-specific colitis (NC, inflammatory control group) and 14 healthy children (normal control group) were included in the study. The interleukin concentrations were measured in the serum of UC children during admission to the hospital and after 4 and 12 weeks of treatment, using commercial quantitative ELISA immunoassays (R&D Systems, MN, USA). The Truelove-Witts clinical activity index was calculated. The endoscopic and histopathological findings were graded by Roths endoscopic scale and standard histopathological scale.
