The survey was developed with the goal of allowing exploration of the structure of costs and revenues of public transport operators, trying to understand what factors mostly contribute to its economic performance. The methodology is based on a benchmarking exercise where it was intended to have the participation of around 20 companies from all continents. For reasons of comparability, preference was given to operators dealing exclusively or predominantly with busses. Time and cost constraints imposed that all exchange of information be done via e-mail exchange. Full confidentiality was assured to respondents. Participation was rather low, with only nine responses, most of which partial. Of these nine respondents seven were from Western Europe, one from Brazil and one from China. Still, careful analysis of the data collected allows results to appear. To ensure confidentiality, and reduce risks of bias from different economic situations of the countries, only ratios of original variables are covered. These ratios are then analysed in two dimensions: which level of diversity does each ratio present - a greater variability indicating that there is room for management decisions (in one of the variables involved in the ratio) with significant impact on results; with associations of levels (high / medium / low) between those ratios can be established across the sample - a stable association between two ratios at their corresponding levels suggesting that, either from physical or cultural factors, one entails the other. To avoid the risk of hasty conclusions based on such a small sample, these relations were then put forward for discussion with representatives of international groups active in PT in several continents, who could assess each result of the analysis as being confirmed or at odds with their own experience. The paper presents the main conclusions of this exercise and suggests that they are interesting enough to make the case for a new effort in a similar direction, with better preparation of the process of engagement of participating companies.
