Aims: A significant increase in biomass production and crop yield of cereals on supply of N have been reported since long as N is deficient in most of the agricultural soils. The hybrid cultivars of these crops are highly responsive to the applied N-fertilizers, resulting an excessive use of chemical fertilizers as a common practice to maximize the crop productivity. Most of the applied fertilizers, however, get lost in the environment due to the limited potentials of plants for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Such losses cause serious economic, agronomical and environmental problems and health hazards to human. Significance of Study: Slow (controlled) release fertilizers (SRFs), which release the nutrient N often synchronized with the growth rate and physiological need of plants, increase the nutrient recovery to a great extent. It also minimizes the nutrient loss and the resultant environmental hazards caused by the excessive use of soluble chemical fertilizers. The SRFs are considered as new generation eco-friendly plant nutrients, which can be used as a viable alternative to the chemical fertilizers. However, the cost effectiveness of the present SRF formulations is a major bottleneck for its popularity especially in the developing world wheremaximum increase in the fertilizer use is expected to feed the burgeoning population. Present paper evaluates the state of art and potentiality of N-based SRFs for cereal plant productivity as an viable alternative to the free chemical fertilizers.
