The problems of modelling and control design for systems with evolving structure are discussed. This is done in the context of cooperative multi-vehicle missions where synergistic interactions are mapped onto system capabilities. A pattern of interactions is termed a configuration. Configurations change with time. The problem of configuration control is addressed by structuring the design in a hierarchical control structure where the properties of the system can be formally analyzed. The overall system is modelled in the framework of dynamic networks of hybrid automata. This modelling approach is discussed in the context of modelling frameworks for systems with evolving structure.
