The optimization of reduction properties of cold bonded agglomerates, containing iron and steelmaking by-product oxides, is essential during recycling. Metal hydrate content in cold bonded by-product agglomerates can play a significant role in the low temperature self-reduction of said agglomerates. The dehydroxylation of Ca(OH)_2 seems to facilitate the low temperature direct reduction of Fe_2O_3 by solid carbon through gaseous intermediates. The current work is a mechanism study of the reaction(s) occurring after dehydroxylation of Ca(OH)_2 in the presence of C, Fe_2O_3 and Fe. Simultaneous thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA) or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and quadrupole mass spectrometric (QMS) gas analysis was performed on samples of Ca(OH)_2 mixed with C, Fe_2O_3 and Fe using a heating rate of 10 deg C/min from 20-800 deg C in argon (Ar). Furthermore, separate thermogravimetric tests were run in order to conduct X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis on some treated samples. Finally, a comparison of the behavior of the Ca(OH)_2-C system is made to low temperature thermal analysis results of cold bonded agglomerate samples.
