Siderophores are small (< 1000 Da) organic chelating agents produced by aerobic microorganisms and graminaceous plants to solubilize essential Fe(III) in circumneutral environments where concentrations of free Fe(III) are limited due to the slow dissolution kinetics and low solubility of Fe(III)-bearing minerals. In this research, we investigated the sorption to and dissolution of smectite (SWy-2, Source Clays Repository, CMS) by the trihydroxamate desferrioxamine siderophores DFO-B and DFO-D_1 These two siderophores have the same fundamental structures, but different terminal groups result in DFO-B being monovalently charged (pKa of deprotonation reaction is 8.4), and DFO-D_1 uncharged under circumneutral pH conditions.
