Time-of-flight mass spectrometry offers unique advantages for the measurement of very short-lived exotic nuclei because of its short measurement cycle duration and its sensitivity. However, the mass resolving power of single-reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) is insufficient for the resolution of most isobaric radionuclides. To overcome this limitation, a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) has been developed, in which isobaric ions can be measured with a cycle time of about 1 ms. Applications of the MR-TOF-MS are envisaged for direct mass measurements and as a high-resolution mass separator at the in-flight facilities SHIP and FRS at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, at which short-lived exotic nuclei can be produced.
