Categorizing and classifying bacterial strains and species is of significant importance in the clinical setting [1]. The treatment of a patient infected with a microbe is crucially dependant on reliable early stage strain identification. Newly developed mass spectrometric methods have the potential to surpass the current time-consuming approaches. Additionally, the identification of biomarkers suitable for routine clinical application remains one of the most urgent challenges of applied proteomics. Sample heterogeneity and limited amounts of clinical samples still present a major hurdle for biomarker detection approaches.
