In a commercial bovine in vitro production (IVP) routine, media are fundamental for satisfactory results. Quality evaluation of media used for commercial bovine embryo production is usually performed by measuring the pH, the osmolarity and the embryo in vitro development rates, which may not evidence sub-optimal media condition. Sub-optimal embryo culture conditions cause economic losses especially due to low embryo viability after transfer to the recipient cow. On human assisted reproduction area, the efficiency of media quality evaluation assays protocols is discussed, and there is a strong recommendation that results from the mouse embryo assay (MEA) be associated to other methods of evaluation. Mass spectrometry fingerprinting has been successfully applied to many products such as for protein digests, beverages, vegetable oils and snake venoms. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of ESI mass spectrometry fingerprinting as a high throughput tool for quality control evaluation of media used for bovine in vitro productions.
