Proteomics of Neoplastic Stem Cells in Children's Germ Cell Tumors

Germ cell tumors (GCTs), believed to arise from transformed primordial germ cells by an unknown mechanism, provide evidence that cancers may begin from genetic mutations and epigenetic modifications of single neoplastic stem cells. GCTs comprise approximately 3percent of all malignant childhood tumors and up to 60percent of all malignancies in men between 20 and 40 years of age. Akin to the pluripotency of embryonic stem and germ cells, GCTs contain self-renewing and differentiating stem cells and may result in a variety of neoplastic structures resembling embryonic (endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm) and extra-embryonic (yolk sac, trophoblast) derivatives. Indeed, prior to the availability of true embryonic stem cells (ESCs), GCT cell lines were used as surrogates for research on ESCs.
