Among microbes, fungi have an immense store of cryptic secondary metabolites. Often these small molecules can be repurposed as probes for studying biology or as pharmaceuticals. The genes that encode secondary metabolic machinery are often genomically colocalized into biosynthetic gene clusters. Because of the immense energetic costs that goes into producing the biosynthetic pathway and its products, strict control over their expression is necessary in the competitive environments that microbes occupy. In fungi, one key means of regulating these gene clusters is by repressively condensing the genes into heterochromatin through reversible histone deacetylation.
