Summary: Novel method uses drying agents for rapid sample preparation to obtain the high alcohol content in scotch and better concentrate scotch. Ethanol standards were analyzed on the FTIR-ATR to determine percent ethanol in scotch samples after sample preparation. Various drying agents, including calcium chloride, silica, magnesium sulfate, and a commercial drying sorbent (Miyazaki Hydro-Protect), and molecular sieves were evaluated on water removal and analyte retention. Best drying agent selected based on compound composition and concentration - crushed molecular sieves. Direct Injection using GCMS analyzed and quantified volatile and semi-volatile compounds in various scotch. Future Works: Further evaluation of reconstitution and concentration. Efficiency of drying agents better evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
