Induction of indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase (as exhibited during neuroinflammation) leads to an increased catabolism of L-tryptophan into L-kynurenine, which is further metabolized to the neuroactive quinolinic acid (via 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenine) and kynurenic acid. In order to investigate the relationship between expression levels of tryptophan and its catabolites and disorders such as depression or Alzheimer's disease, an assay was needed that allows the quantification of the analytes of interest with sufficient sensitivity and analytical robustness.
