The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of serum concentrations of Myeloperoxidase (MPO) for the development of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in 90 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with primary angioplasty (PCI). Serum concentrations of MPO were significantly higher in AMI patients with SIRS than in patients without SIRS (77.36 +- 25.28 mg/ml vs 60.30 +- 29.23 ng/ml, respectively, p=0,03). Backward stepwise binary logistic regression analyses showed MPO concentrations were an independent predictor for SIRS development in AMI patients (OR: 2.1; 95% CI [1.19 - 4.2]; p <0.001). Conclusions: determination of MPO concentrations at admission in AMI patients treated with PCI identifies those with a major risk for SIRS development.
