Meloxicam belongs to oxicam class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is widely used to treat pain or swelling caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. After oral administration of meloxicam, it is absorbed with bioavailability of 89% and has long half-life (22-24 hour). Meloxicam is extensively metabolized to four inactive metabolites by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9 with a minor contribution of CYP3A4. The primary metabolic pathway of meloxicam is oxidation and 5'-carboxymeloxicam has been known for the major metabolite of meloxicam. The aim of the study was to develop and validate a more rapid and sensitive analytical method for simultaneous determination of meloxicam and 5'-carboxymeloxicam based on LC-MS/MS system.
