Effect of Different Planting Density on Cotton Canopy Structure, Canopy Photosynthesis and Yield Formation

The influence of different planting density on cotton canopy structure, canopy photosynthesis, and yield formation was studied under no water and fertilizer stress condition. The field-scale experiment with four planting densities ranks from 30000 to82500 plants per hectare for each of the two cultivars, i.e. early matured cultiyar CRI37 and mid matured cultivar Jimian25, was conducted in Lang fang experimental farm of Soil and Fertilizer Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences from 2002to 2003. Cotton canopy structure factors included LAI, Mean Foliage Inclination Angle (MFIA), Transmission Coefficient for Radiation Penetration (TCRP), and Transmission Coefficient for Diffuse Penetration (TCDP). Canopy photosynthesis factors includedCanopy Apparent Photosynthesis (CAP) and Canopy Respiration (CR). Yield formation factors included dry matter accumulation and distribution and yield. The results show that CRI37 and Jimian25 have ideal canopy structure and photosynthesis characteristicsunder the planting densities of 75000 plants per hectare and 52500 plants per hectare respectively, thus, can get the optimal yields. It can be concluded that selecting suitable planting density can improve solar energy utilization efficiency and resultin optimal yield. Ideal canopy structure indexes for the two cotton cultivars were also indicated.
