LNG and LPG as fuel for ship propulsion have attractive qualities and will assist the marine industry to fulfil the objectives of MARPOL ANNEX VI. The designer and the operator of ships fuelled with gas must be aware of the special Class and Statutory requirements that apply for such installations. The technology of hydrogen as fuel for electrical propulsion plants is still under development. Classification guidelines are available. Use of new technology for reduction of the environmental impact requires attention on the training of people responsible for the operation of the equipment.
