Mercury is one of highly bioaccumulated chemicals of concern in the Great Lake Basin and other lake/river systems in the US. In order to protect wildlife, fish habitats and public health, US environmental agencies regulate much stricter mercury limits with digit part per trillion (ppt) levels for facilities directly discharging their wastewater to water bodies.
