摘要

Molecular biological tools (MBTs) that can measure microbial activity in situ can make a case for natural or enhanced attenuation as treatment methods, and can give further support to, if not replace, the current use of microcosm and column studies. Measuring mRNA as a bioindicator is useful because changes in transcript levels reveal microbial response to environmental changes more quickly than other cellular indicators. Moreover, the instability of mRNA, while making it difficult to work with, means that it is a timely indicator. The possibility of detecting a false positive, meaning detecting transcripts while the cell is inactive, is decreased.
