Arsenic-contaminated soils collected from five locations in the southeastern United States were used in lab-scale column experiments with FeSO4·7H2O (FS) and FeSO4·7H2O plus LaCl3·7H2O (FSLA) solutions. These experiments were designed to determine the retardation, retention, and distribution of As, Fe, and La in these soils during and after treatments. All soils showed significant capacities for retention of Fe and La during treatments. Primary retardation of Fe was dependent on oxygen availability in the columns controlled by the fluid flow scheme. Unsaturated fluid flow resulted in late Fe breakthrough and higher retention of Fe at the proximal column sections. Saturated fluid flow yielded similar Fe distribution trends, but early breakthrough and lower overall retention. No significant Fe was eluted from the treated soils during synthetic acid rain (SAR) leaching. The distributions of La, though not as variable as Fe, were relatively lower at the proximal end than at the distal end. In addition, all soils other than PA showed a larger proportion (20-43%) of La mobilization from the treated soils during leaching. No significant As was released during SAR leaching from both FS and FSLA treated soils. All treated soil columns showed uniform or slightly higher As distribution at the proximal end.
