It's been over a decade since the styrene industry has seen strong returns. The last op- portunity was in 2004-2005 but feedstocks managed to capture most of the chain margins, leaving a small share to trickle down to styrene. As the hopes of a styrene up cycle in 2004-2005 faded, a massive restructuring of the industry began as Styrenics business units were spun off, merged and/or shutdown. The results of these changes are now starting to take fruit. Although the near term economic outlook is troubling, it may be just what the styrene industry needs to fnish the restructuring and enforce expansion discipline. The supply-demand balances continue to show operating rates tightening and fnally a more posi- tive outlook for the industry as the global economy recovers. Changes in some key trends further supports the return of styrene industry such as the end of over zealous new styrene capacity additions, the slow down of POSM capacity additions, increased infuence of the faster growing EPS and ABS markets and the new found competitiveness of PS versus other polymers. Advances in new technologies have shifted the competitive dynamics, helping some regional producers over others. As always, all of the news has not been positive for the styrene industry but generally the good outweighs the bad and the changes generally favor the styrene producers. Using our supply demand balances as a baseline, we will con- sider some alternate scenarios and the possibility that styrene margins might lift off once again. Right now the changes have put the industry back on the launch pad but storm clouds threaten to roll in. The outlook remains fckle, so will it be 3-2-1 liftoff or Mission Abort?
