Helium exhibits extreme physical and chemical properties leading to its use ina broad range of industrial and commercial applications. With the lowestboiling point, helium is also used extensively in cryogenic research. Since itsdiscovery, helium demand has rapidly increased. In 2007, tightness in globalsupply created difficulty for producers to meet demand. The tightness causedseveral major producers to ration helium supply and triggered a significantrise in market prices. This paper charts the history of helium production anduses; examines key factors currently affecting supply and demand; andprojects the future for this invaluable, yet finite resource.
